Service Pack 2 does not include the code updates required to use the new Flight Simulator X: Acceleration aircraft. You must purchase and install Flight Simulator X: Acceleration to use those aircraft.
After you have installed Service Pack 2, you will be able to play multiplayer games only with users who have installed either Service Pack 2 or Flight SimulatorX: Acceleration.
DirectX
Flight Simulator X Service Pack 2 previews the new technology of DirectX 10 to enhance environmental effects such as bloom, realistic water, and virtual cockpit shadowing. You must have a DirectX 10 graphics adapter to enable the DirectX 10 features (the check box for DirectX 10 is not visible if you don't have compatible hardware).
Features and improvements include virtual cockpit shadowing, HDR bloom, water enhancements, and efficiency improvements to increase performance in some areas.

Sound Settings
We modified the Sound Settings dialog box so you can select separate audio adapters directly in the Sound Settings dialog box. We removed the Configure button and provided two list boxes to select audio adapters to separate voice and other sounds.
Multiplayer and Service Pack 2
Service Pack 2 brings computers running Flight Simulator X or Flight Simulator X Service Pack 1 into multiplayer compatibility with Flight Simulator X: Acceleration. Computers that have only the original retail version of Flight Simulator X or Flight Simulator X Service Pack 1 cannot connect in multiplayer with computers running Acceleration or SP2.
If you install SP2 but do not install Acceleration, you can connect to Acceleration multiplayer sessions but you cannot participate in Acceleration-only activities such as racing.

Products using Flight Simulator X - Service Pack 2 with DirectX 10 Preview
Microsoft Flight Simulator Service Pack 2 has a feature that is only available on Vista. This is the DirectX 10 (DX10) preview mode. We feel it is important to let customers know what this means, and what Flight1's official position is on the use of this and our aircraft based products.

Flight1 currently has 4 FSX products that are not compatible with the preview of DX10, but are still FSX compatible (there may be other products designed by our vendor partners that are also not DX10 compatible). For Flight1 specifically, these products are the 172, 441, Ultimate Traffic for FSX (UT 2007), and the ATR 72-500.
When using products that are not compatible with the DX10 preview 'checkbox' setting, simply uncheck this option in Flight Simulator X. You can easily toggle this option on and off as needed.
Because this option in FSX is considered to be only a 'preview', with limited functionality, Flight1 has to decide whether it is valid for us to rework these products specifically for the preview (read more below). Overall, the DX10 preview may work better for some users, and not well for others.
The 172, 441, and ATR, are based on models that were originally compiled using the FS9 SDK. That does not mean they will not look good! Microsoft deliberately worked on, and included backwards compatiblity for FS9 based models in FSX. They just do not take advantage of some FSX specific functions. However, all the products above are officially FSX compatible, with some features of the products even optimized for, and specific to FSX.
All the products listed, with the exception of Ultimate Traffic, had free upgrades to make them compatible with FSX. Yet considerable effort went into the compatibility conversions of these products for FSX. At the time these products were put to market, FSX SP2 was a long way off, and we could only work on compatibility for the core FSX version, and then we had to do some additional rework for the FSX SP1 (Service Pack 1) release. When SP2 for FSX was released, the DX10 preview was included. For the first time with FSX (or for one of the first times in recent Flight Simulator history), Microsoft did create a loss of backwards compatibility mid-stream in a product cycle that was not easily correctable. This now means that in some cases it could take 100's of hours of work to make products compatible with a preview of DX10. In some cases for some developers, including Flight1 with Ultimate Traffic, it would be near impossible to do such a conversion (from a time and financial perspective), without creating a whole new product.
While we are disappointed that Microsoft did drop some backwards compatibility with the DX10 preview in the middle of a product release cycle (FSX), we are also glad that they acknowledged that it is only a 'Preview', of DX10, and that the backwards compatibility that previously existed in FSX was still in place.
Flight1 always strides to give as much to the customer as possible, so we do apologize if some customers cannot use the DX10 option with a few of our products, or our vendors products. It is just too hard to practically justify the work it would take for the above products to make them preview mode compatible. We may, as well as our vendors, make updates or new releases available that may be DX10 preview compatible in the future. But until such time, we felt it was appropriate to make an official statement on our view of the DirectX 10 preview.
